In short
Here are 66 free Valentine coloring pages to print on US Letter paper, with no email or sign-up. There are hearts, cute animals, dinosaurs and space, real animals that pair up, roses, sweet treats, Cupid, friends and family, and old-fashioned valentines, plus 12 color-in cards and 8 bookmarks to cut out and give, and six intricate pages for adults. Easy pages are one big shape in thick lines for ages 2 to 4, medium pages add a simple scene for ages 4 to 7, and detailed pages are for ages 8 to adult. Tap a page's title to open the full-size file, then print at 100% or Actual size.
Before drawing a single page, we read the Valentine coloring pages that rank on Google, from Crayola and ABCmouse to the big printable galleries. Nearly every animal on them is a cartoon holding a heart. None gives every page an age and a reason, none links a single fact to a source, and the color-in valentines a class actually swaps mostly sit on separate pages, when they exist at all. Nobody offered bookmarks, nobody mentioned the classmates who can't have candy, and one of the first pictures Google showed us was a licensed cartoon character.
So every page here is new, drawn for this post with the image model behind our free photo-to-coloring-page tool and checked by hand: the candy hearts are blank so your child writes the words, no bear has a picture on its tummy, and every Cupid wears a tunic. Each section has one true story to tell while the crayons are out, linked to where it comes from, and a few popular ones turn out to be wrong. Wild sea otters, for one, almost never hold hands. Print as many as you like for home or a classroom. Please don't sell them.
Which Valentine coloring page suits which age?
Easy pages suit most children from two to four, medium pages four to seven, and detailed pages eight and up, while the last section is drawn for teens and adults. The levels follow how coloring develops: toddlers scribble across a shape, preschoolers begin to aim for it, and school-age children fill small areas on purpose.
The CDC's milestone checklists list scribbling at 18 months and drawing a circle when shown how at 3 years. In Huang and colleagues' 2024 study of 239 children aged 3 to 6, about two-thirds of the 3- and 4-year-olds colored at a transitional level, between scribbling and staying inside the lines, and nearly nine in ten 6-year-olds colored in a mature way. For a two-year-old, color together and keep the area small, one heart rather than the whole page. The children's occupational therapists at Aneurin Bevan health board in Wales suggest coloring pictures together and keeping the areas to color "small and achievable". Our dinosaur coloring pages go further into grip and crayon skills by age.
| Level | Usually suits | What's on the page | Good first picks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 2 to 4 | One big shape, very thick lines, almost no background | One big heart, puppy with a heart, heart cupcake |
| Medium | 4 to 7 | The subject in a simple scene, bold lines, a few details | Heart hot-air balloon, sea otters, Cupid takes aim |
| Detailed | 8 to adult | A realistic scene or a page full of patterns, many small areas | Heart of flowers, the heart on Pluto, Chaucer's birds |
| For adults | Teens and adults | Fine patterns from edge to edge, many tiny areas | Heart and rose mandala, stained-glass heart, tea for two |
The ages are starting points, not rules. Let a child who loves owls color the detailed owls badly and happily.
How do you print these coloring pages?
Tap a page's title under any preview to open the full-size file, 2,550 by 3,300 pixels, which is 8.5 by 11 inches at 300 dpi, and print it at 100% or Actual size on US Letter paper. Each title opens the picture itself, with no PDF bundle, cloud drive or sign-in in the way. Adobe's print help explains the setting: Fit "reduces or enlarges each page to fit the printable area", while Actual size prints at full scale. On A4 paper (a little narrower than Letter), choose Fit.
Plain 20 lb copy paper (75 g/m²) is fine for crayons and colored pencils. For markers, slide a scrap sheet underneath: Strathmore notes that most papers eventually let markers bleed through, and lighter ones sooner. Print the cards and bookmarks on card stock if your printer takes it, since limits vary a lot by model: Epson's ET-16500 takes one sheet of cardstock up to 68 lb (256 g/m²) in its rear slot, and Canon's PIXMA TS9520 up to 75 lb card stock. Check your printer's paper spec and feed card one sheet at a time.
Heart coloring pages
These six heart coloring pages run from one big heart in thick lines and a happy heart with a face for toddlers to a heart hot-air balloon, a tree whose leaves are all hearts, a heart mandala and a heart made of flowers. None of them looks like a real heart, and that's very old news. The heart inside you is a muscle about the size of your fist, and in a single day it beats about 100,000 times. The Greek doctor Galen compared its shape to a pine cone, and the curvy heart shape is far older than Valentine's Day: in ancient art it stands for ivy, grape and fig leaves, not affection. One of the oldest known pictures of a heart as a sign of love was painted in a Paris workshop around 1255, in a French love story called the Romance of the Pear, and that heart still looks like a pine cone, with its point at the top. The dip at the top of the heart we draw today first appears in the early 1300s.
Valentine animal coloring pages
These six Valentine animal coloring pages have a puppy hugging a heart, a kitten with a heart balloon, two bears sharing a heart cookie, love bugs in a garden, two barn owls by moonlight and a row of patterned pets. The owls are the real Valentine animal here, because a barn owl's face really is heart-shaped, and not for decoration. The Barn Owl Trust explains that the heart-shaped facial disc collects sound and directs it toward the ears, which sit at different heights, one a little higher than the other. That lets the owl tell whether a squeak came from above or below, and a barn owl can catch prey in total darkness by hearing alone. The love bugs come with a myth. You can't tell a ladybug's age by counting its spots, the National Park Service says; the bright red warns predators off, and the number and pattern of spots mostly tell you which kind of ladybug it is. North America has almost 500 kinds.
Dinosaur, robot and space Valentine coloring pages
Not every child wants roses, so these six pages star a T. rex holding a heart, a robot with a heart on its chest, a rocket with a heart-shaped window, a child astronaut with a heart balloon, Pluto's heart and a valley of dinosaurs around a heart-shaped pond. Two true space stories go with them. Pluto really has a heart: a huge pale region called Tombaugh Regio, named for Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past it on July 14, 2015, within 7,800 miles, and the heart's left half, Sputnik Planitia, turned out to be a plain of frozen nitrogen about 1,000 kilometers across, or about 620 miles. On Valentine's Day 2000, a NASA spacecraft called NEAR moved into orbit around an asteroid named Eros, after the Greek god of love, the first spacecraft ever to orbit an asteroid. A year later it touched down on Eros, though it was never built to land. As for the T. rex hug, its arms were about a meter long, with two clawed fingers each and too short to reach its mouth, yet scientists who studied the bones estimated it could have bench-pressed about 400 pounds with them. That number is worked out from muscle scars on the bones, not measured.
Which animals really pair up?
These six pages are real animals drawn true to life (a gentoo penguin, lovebirds, sea otters, seahorses, mute swans and cardinals), and every one has a pairing story that holds up, though most get exaggerated. Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins build nests of small stones, and both partners collect them, because a pile of stones keeps the eggs out of the meltwater. They steal from the neighbors too: one study at Ross Island recorded 329 attempts to take stones from other nests. The story of a male hunting the beach for one perfect pebble to propose with has little evidence behind it. Seahorse dads carry the babies, and in White's seahorse, partners meet every morning, link tails and twirl around the same anchor, called a holdfast, for about six minutes. In one long English study, 85 percent of breeding mute swans kept the same mate the next year if it was still alive. A male cardinal passes his mate a bite of food, beak to beak, in early spring. And lovebirds, small parrots from Africa and Madagascar, take their scientific name, Agapornis, from the Greek words for love and bird.
Do sea otters really hold hands?
Hardly ever, in the wild. Sea otters really do wrap themselves in kelp so they don't drift while they sleep, and they rest together in floating groups called rafts, which stay together, the Seattle Aquarium says, through otters watching and listening for each other and the odd bump. Paw-holding happens, but not often. The famous paw-holding video shows two otters at the Vancouver Aquarium, and the field biologist behind that page has seen it in the wild only twice in about 20 years of watching. So the medium page on this sheet, two otters floating paw in paw, is the aquarium version; the kelp around them is the wild one.
Rose and flower coloring pages
These six flower pages start with one big rose and three tulips in a heart pot for toddlers, add a bouquet and a heart-shaped garden bed, and finish with a botanical rose stem drawn like an old print and a wreath of roses and peonies. Roses are still the Valentine flower: in a 2022 poll for the Society of American Florists, 83 percent of Valentine flower buyers bought roses, and red was the favorite color. Two things to tell a child coloring the botanical page. Roses don't technically have thorns: their sharp points are prickles, which grow from the outer layer of the stem and snap off cleanly, while a true thorn is a tiny pointed branch. And wild roses usually have just five petals; the big, many-petaled roses were bred by people. Victorians gave almost every flower a meaning, and the meanings weren't always the ones we'd guess. In Kate Greenaway's 1884 Language of Flowers, a rose means "Love," but a deep red rose means "Bashful shame," and the flower for "Declaration of love" is the red tulip. Our birth month flowers have the meanings for every month.
Valentine treat coloring pages
These six treat pages give toddlers a heart cupcake and four blank candy hearts, then a plate of heart cookies and an open box of chocolates, and finally a bakery window and a page packed with sweets. The candy hearts are blank on purpose, so your child writes the words, which is how conversation hearts began. In Boston, Oliver Chase invented a lozenge-cutting machine in 1847, his brother Daniel built a machine that printed words onto candy in 1866, and the heart-shaped Sweethearts arrived in 1902. The early sayings were long, like "How long shall I have to wait? Pray be considerate." When the company that made them closed in 2018, there were no Sweethearts for Valentine's Day 2019. A new maker brought them back in 2020, and many came out blank after a new printing machine was damaged. The heart-shaped box of chocolates is usually credited to Richard Cadbury and dated 1868, although Cadbury's own history doesn't claim it. For the classmates who can't have candy, the cards and bookmarks further down are the answer.
Cupid coloring pages
These six Cupid coloring pages, with every Cupid in a tunic, run from a little cherub on a cloud and a winged heart to Cupid taking aim, two cherubs with a garland of roses, a classical Cupid in a garden drawn like an old engraving, and Cupid's two arrows. That last page comes from a Roman poem about 2,000 years old. In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Cupid carries two kinds of arrow: one is golden and sharp, and makes you fall in love, and the other is blunt and tipped with lead, and makes you run from love. After the god Apollo teases him about his little bow, Cupid shoots Apollo with the gold arrow and the nymph Daphne with the lead one (Book 1, lines 468 to 474). Cupid was the Roman god of love and desire, the son of Venus, and the Romans' version of the Greek god Eros; his name comes from the Latin cupido, meaning desire. He wasn't always a chubby baby, either. Classical Greek artists usually showed him as a beautiful winged youth, and the baby version took hold in the Hellenistic period, between 323 and 31 BC.
Can you turn your child into a Valentine coloring page?
Yes, and a page of your child makes a valentine no shop sells. Our free photo-to-coloring-page tool redraws one photo of your child as a coloring page in a world they pick (riding a unicorn, floating in space as an astronaut, a mermaid and more), with their face kept and everything around them in black outlines. It takes about 20 seconds, needs no account or email, and downloads as a US Letter PDF to print at 100%. The photo is sent once to draw the page and isn't stored, and nothing is used to train AI. It works for a pet or a whole family photo too, so the dog can have a page for Valentine's Day as well.
The same worlds come as full-color portraits too: Unicorn Meadow puts your child on the unicorn on a jigsaw puzzle, a canvas or a blanket, and you see a watermarked proof before anything prints.
How do you make color-in valentines for a class?
Print the card sheets, let your child color and sign them, then cut along the dashed lines. There are 12 color-in valentines and 8 bookmarks: two big cards to a page for little hands and four cards to a page for a whole class, each card with a blank banner or box for a name, and four bookmarks to a page for older kids. Most children snip with scissors between 2 and 3, and by about 4 most can cut along a straight line, with circles by about 5. The straight lines here suit a four-year-old with help, and anyone younger needs an adult to do the cutting. For signing, the CDC's checklist has most five-year-olds writing some letters of their name, so a preschooler can add a first letter and a heart.
Why give valentines that aren't candy?
Because a card or a bookmark leaves nobody out. Food Allergy Research & Education says about 1 in 13 children has a food allergy, roughly two in every classroom, and its Valentine's Day classroom advice suggests non-food treats, with bookmarks named in its school guidelines. You'll have company: in the National Retail Federation's 2026 survey, 27 percent of those celebrating planned to buy something for their children's classmates and teachers. A joke from our Valentine jokes for kids fits on the back of each card.
Friendship and family Valentine coloring pages
These six pages are for friends and family: two children holding hands, two on a seesaw, a classroom of valentine mailboxes, a grandmother and child cutting heart cookies, a page of friendship bracelets and children from around the world holding hands around a heart-shaped globe. Valentine's Day isn't only for sweethearts, and in some countries it's mostly about friends. In Finland, February 14 is ystävänpäivä, literally "friend's day", a celebration of friendship since a 1987 campaign by the Finnish Red Cross and the post office. In Estonia it's sõbrapäev, also friend's day, a custom that reached Estonia through Finland in the late 1980s. If your child wants to say it without words, teach them the American Sign Language "I love you" handshape, with the thumb, pointer finger and pinky up and palm out, which joins the letters I, L and Y into one sign. Baking with a grandparent? Our questions to ask your grandparents keep the talk going while the cookies bake.
Old-fashioned valentine coloring pages
These six pages come from Valentine history: a sealed envelope and a paper lace heart for little ones, a Victorian valentine with cherubs and a tree full of bird couples, then Chaucer's parliament of birds and an ornate 1850s lace valentine. The birds are the oldest part of the story. Around 1380 the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a dream poem, the Parliament of Fowls, in which every kind of bird gathers before the goddess Nature, who sits on a hill of flowers with a female eagle on her hand: "For this was on seynt Valentynes day, / Whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make" (make means mate). A Chaucer scholar at Penn State calls it the earliest evidence linking the day with romantic love. Paper lace is said to have been discovered by accident in 1834, and after Britain's Penny Post began in 1840, the number of valentines sent shot up. In Worcester, Massachusetts, Esther Howland advertised her lace valentines on February 5, 1850, and a newspaper called her the "Mother of the American Valentine" after her death in 1904.
Who was St. Valentine?
Very little is known about him. Early church lists name at least three martyrs called Valentine remembered on February 14, among them a priest in Rome and a bishop of Terni in Italy, and their written lives date from much later. When the Catholic Church revised its calendar in 1969, it moved his feast to local calendars because, apart from his name, all that is known is his burial on the Via Flaminia. He is still a saint. The famous stories, that he secretly married couples or signed a note "from your Valentine" in jail, are medieval legends, and a USC historian notes they had no basis in third-century history. The link to love came more than a thousand years after him, with Chaucer's birds.
Valentine coloring pages for adults
These six are drawn for teens and adults: a heart and rose mandala, a heart divided into zentangle patterns, a wallpaper of roses, a stained-glass heart, folk-art birds around a heart and a tea party for two. The small areas suit fine-tip markers or sharp colored pencils, and a page printed on card stock can be framed when it's done.
Does coloring really reduce anxiety?
A little, for a while, in small studies. In a 2005 study of 84 college students, 20 minutes of coloring a mandala or a plaid pattern lowered anxiety more than coloring on blank paper, and the plaid worked about as well as the mandala, so the structure seemed to matter more than the circle. In a 2017 trial, 104 university women who colored every day for a week reported fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression afterwards, while a group doing logic puzzles didn't; the authors call their results preliminary. A 2022 review of eight trials with 578 adults found mandalas no better than free drawing, with the biggest effects in the smallest, least precise studies. And choosing your own colors lowered anxiety more than copying someone else's scheme in a study of 85 students, so ignore anyone who tells you the roses must be red. Treat coloring as a pleasant way to unwind, not a treatment.
When is Valentine's Day 2027?
Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, February 14, so a school card swap has to happen on a school day before it. The next day, Monday, February 15, is the federal holiday officially named Washington's Birthday and widely called Presidents' Day, so many families get a long weekend. February 14, 2027, is also the First Sunday of Lent, four days after Ash Wednesday, and Lunar New Year, the Year of the Goat, comes eight days earlier, on Saturday, February 6. Here's how the pages fit the month.
| Date | What happens | Pages to print |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 6 (Sat) | Lunar New Year, the Year of the Goat | The lantern and dragon dance pages in our winter coloring pages |
| Feb 8 to 12 | The school week before Valentine's Day | Cards and bookmarks to color, cut and sign; valentine mailboxes |
| Feb 12 (Fri) | 26 years since NEAR touched down on the asteroid Eros (2001) | Heart rocket, astronaut, the heart on Pluto |
| Feb 14 (Sun) | Valentine's Day, and the First Sunday of Lent | Hearts, Cupid, roses, old-fashioned valentines |
| Feb 15 (Mon) | Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day), a federal holiday | Whatever is left in the stack, and the adult pages for you |
Holiday dates from OPM, the USCCB 2027 liturgical calendar and the Hong Kong Observatory; the Eros landing date from NASA.
What do most Valentine coloring pages get wrong?
Valentine's Day collects stories, and coloring pages repeat them: swans that never part, otters holding hands, a saint who married soldiers in secret. Some are partly true, and some come from centuries after the fact. Here's what the sources say.
| What the page or story says | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Swans mate for life | Mostly: 85% of breeding mute swans kept a living mate, and about 3% of breeding pairs split up |
| Otters hold hands so they don't drift apart | Wild otters wrap themselves in kelp; paw-holding is vanishingly rare in the wild, and the famous video was filmed at an aquarium |
| A penguin proposes with the perfect pebble | Both partners collect nest stones, and stealing them is common |
| Lovebirds die of a broken heart | No evidence; a single pet lovebird can be an affectionate pet |
| A ladybug's spots tell its age | They don't; spots help tell the species |
| The heart shape looks like a real heart | The real heart is more like a pine cone; in ancient art the same curvy shape showed leaves |
| Roses have thorns | Botanically they're prickles |
| Cupid was always a chubby baby | Classical Greek art showed a winged youth; the baby came later |
| Valentine's Day grew out of the Roman Lupercalia | There's no firm evidence linking them |
| St. Valentine secretly married soldiers | A medieval legend with no basis in third-century history |
| The first valentine was written in the Tower of London in 1415 | The British Library dates Charles d'Orléans's poem to about 1443 to 1460, after he went home to France |
| Cadbury made the first heart-shaped box in 1861 | Often credited, usually dated 1868; 1861 is when Richard and George took over the firm |
Frequently asked questions
Are these Valentine coloring pages free?
+
Yes. All 66 are free to print, with no email, account or sign-up. Tap a page's title to open the full-size file and print it at 100% or Actual size on US Letter paper. Print as many as you like for home or a classroom; please don't sell them.
What age are Valentine coloring pages for?
+
Easy pages, one big shape in thick lines, suit ages 2 to 4. Medium pages, the subject in a simple scene, suit ages 4 to 7. Detailed pages, realistic or full of patterns, suit ages 8 to adult, and the last section is drawn for teens and adults. Treat the ages as a starting point and let your child pick.
Can I print these for my classroom?
+
Yes. Print as many copies as your class, daycare or library needs. Each page opens directly as a picture file, with no cloud drive or sign-in. The card and bookmark sheets make non-food valentines for a class swap, and every card has a blank space for a name. We only ask that you don't sell them.
How do you make the color-in valentines and bookmarks?
+
Print the sheets, on card stock if your printer takes it, then color, sign and cut along the dashed lines. The big two-to-a-page cards suit the youngest, the four-to-a-page cards suit a class swap, and the bookmarks suit older kids. Most four-year-olds can cut a straight line with help; younger children need an adult to cut.
Will these print on A4 paper?
+
Yes. The pages are sized for US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches. On A4, which is a little narrower and a little longer, choose Fit or Fit to printable area in the print settings, and the page shrinks by a few percent with nothing cut off.
Were these coloring pages made with AI?
+
Yes. We wrote a description of every page and drew it with an AI image model, the same one behind our free photo-to-coloring-page tool, then checked each page by hand. Pages with mistakes were redrawn or replaced: a sign-language hand came out with six fingers, and a pair of seahorses whose tails were meant to link only curled up side by side.
Do swans really mate for life?
+
Mostly. In a long study of mute swans in England, 85% of breeding birds kept the same mate the next year if it was still alive, and about 3% of breeding pairs split up. A widowed swan can pair up again. The heart their necks make happens during courtship, and male swans can make the same shape when they square off to fight.
Can I make a Valentine coloring page of my child?
+
You can make a coloring page of your child, your pet or your whole family with our free photo-to-coloring-page tool. Upload one photo, pick a world such as Unicorn Meadow or Space Explorer, and the page is ready in about 20 seconds. It needs no email, and the photo isn't stored.
Give them a coloring book that stars them
