Six ways to cut it

Cut right around their lines, the pendant is the shape they drew. Where arms, legs or a sun's rays reach out, the smooth shapes keep every line and leave no points to catch.

Questions

Anything else, write to hello@thecuriousthing.com.

What kind of drawing works?

Anything they made on paper: marker, crayon, pencil, pen or paint. Photograph it flat, in good light, filling the frame. Faint pencil is made bolder, and colour and paper texture are left out, because the pendant is lines on metal.

What if they have not drawn anything yet?

Let them make something in the Curious Theatre, our free drawing toy. They draw on the screen, it comes to life as a paper puppet on a little stage, and the grown-up button brings the drawing straight back here, ready for the necklace.

Will you change their drawing?

No. We keep the same shapes, proportions and wobbles, and their own letters and spelling. The only changes are the ones a one-inch pendant needs: every line is made an even, bold weight and stray specks are dropped.

Which shape should I choose?

Outline cuts the metal right around their lines, so the pendant is the shape of what they drew. It is lovely on a compact drawing like a face or an animal. Where arms, legs, rays or letters reach out, those parts become thin points of metal, so the other five set the drawing on a smooth shape instead: a pebble that follows their outline without the points, or a circle, oval, arch or heart. The studio shows all six on your drawing before you choose.

Black line or engraved?

The same pendant at the same price, finished two ways. Black line prints the drawing in crisp black lines, the closest to how it looks on paper. Engraved is a laser mark in the metal itself, a subtle frosted line that is clearest on gold.

Is the preview what I will get?

The drawing in the studio is the design, not a picture of the necklace: the lines of the exact file we send to be made. The studio also shows the pendant itself, rendered by the maker on the real piece in each metal and in the finish you picked, before you pay.

How big is it?

About an inch across at its longest. It hangs on an 18 inch chain and arrives in a gift box.

Which metals can I choose?

Stainless steel ($59), gold plated over stainless steel with a gold chain ($69), or solid sterling silver with an anti-tarnish finish ($89).

What happens to the photo of the drawing?

It is used to draw your designs and is not stored. Only the design you approve is kept, because it is the file your pendant is made from.

How long does it take?

Each pendant is made to order in the US. It leaves the workshop in 2 to 5 days, then ships by standard post.
