200 birthday wishes for a niece

In short

Before you write, text her mom or dad one question: what is she into right now? Put the answer in the card, then add the warm line you were going to write anyway. An aunt or uncle usually hears about a niece's year secondhand, so one specific detail is what shows you were paying attention. The wishes below are sorted by her age and by who's holding the pen: an aunt, an uncle, both of you, a great-aunt, or family by marriage. There are funny lines, blessings with verses, wishes in Spanish, and lines that Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott wrote to and about their own nieces.

question to ask her parents first

A niece's birthday card comes from an odd position. You love her like family, but you see her a few times a year, and most of what you know about her week arrived as a photo in the family group chat. That's fine. It's also why the card matters more than it seems to. Americans buy about 6.5 billion greeting cards a year, and birthday cards are more than half of them, according to the Greeting Card Association. The sociologist Robert Milardo, citing a large survey of Boston-area families, notes that people are "apparently more inclined to acknowledge an aunt or nephew's birthday, or other cause for celebration, by exchanging gifts" than a friend's.

So the card is expected. The trick is making it read like it came from you and could only go to her. Below are 200 wishes, poems, verses and real aunts' lines to start from, grouped so you can skip to the niece you're writing to, plus a table of what lands at each age.

A girl in a gold paper crown, seen from behind on a step stool, throws her arms up as her aunt ties a pastel balloon ribbon to her wrist in a sunny kitchen decorated for a birthday
Ask her parents what she's into this year. That one detail is what makes the card hers.

What do you write in a niece's birthday card?

Write one specific thing she did this year, then the affectionate line. If you don't know what she did, ask: a single text to her parent ("what's she obsessed with right now?") gets you the detail that makes the card hers. It might be the soccer goal, the hamster she named after a vegetable, or the chapter book she finished in a weekend. Then write whatever loving sentence you had planned. On its own that sentence could go to any niece. With the detail above it, it can only go to her.

People tend to cut the specific line because it feels like too much. In three experiments published in Psychological Science, Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley had people write gratitude letters and predict how the recipients would react. The writers underestimated how good the recipients would feel and overestimated how awkward they would find it. A birthday card isn't a thank-you letter, but the mistake is the same: the plain, specific sentence you're tempted to cut is the one that lands.

What should a niece's birthday card say at each age?

Write for whoever will actually read it. A first-birthday card is for her parents now and for her years from now, so date it and tell the story of the day you met her. From two to five a parent reads it out loud, so lead with her name and the number. From six to twelve she reads it herself, often at the party, so give her one detail and a plan for your next visit. Teenagers read alone, and what an aunt or uncle can offer them is one more grown-up on their side. After eighteen, write to her more and more as a friend.

How do you write a birthday message for a niece from scratch?

Fill one of these in. Put a fact in the blank, not an adjective: "this year you learned to ride without training wheels" will mean more to her than "this year you were amazing."

  • Happy birthday to my niece, who this year ___. Your parents told me, and I've told everyone since.
  • Of everything you did at ___, my favorite was ___. Happy birthday.
  • You've got your mom's ___ and your very own ___. Happy birthday, kiddo.
  • Next time you visit, we're going to ___. Consider this card your ticket. Happy birthday.
  • I still remember when you ___. Look at you now. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday from your uncle, who will always ___.

Short birthday wishes for a niece

A short birthday wish for a niece says one true thing in a line, such as "Being your aunt is the best title I've ever had." These fit a text, a gift tag, a photo caption or the space under a printed verse, and each leaves room for one line of your own underneath.

  • Happy birthday, kiddo. Being your aunt is the best title I've ever had.
  • Happy birthday to the coolest person in this family. Don't tell your parents I said so.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. Save me the seat next to yours.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, my favorite reason to show up early.
  • Happy birthday! Today the whole family agrees on one thing: you.
  • Happy birthday to the niece who always asks how my day went, and means it.
  • Happy birthday, sweet girl. I'm proud to be on your team.
  • Happy birthday to my niece and my favorite person to spoil.
  • Happy birthday. Big wishes, bigger cake.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who still beats me at Go Fish.

Birthday wishes for a niece from her aunt

The best aunt cards lean on the two things an aunt has that nobody else does. You knew her parent as a kid, so you have the stories. And you're not in charge of bedtime, which makes you someone she can talk to. Use one of those, sign it with the name she calls you, and you've written the card she'll keep.

  • I held you when you were a day old, and I've been your biggest fan ever since. Happy birthday.
  • You laugh exactly the way your mom did at your age, and I have the stories to prove it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. Being your aunt means I get all the fun and none of the bedtimes.
  • Happy birthday to the niece who made me an aunt. It's still my favorite promotion.
  • My house will always have a spare bed, a listening ear and a snack drawer with your name on it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. I'm the aunt, so I'm allowed to say you're perfect.
  • Your dad was the one who got us in trouble as kids. You got his grin and, luckily, better judgment. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday from your aunt, who will always pick up the phone, any hour, whatever it's about.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who taught me every word of her favorite song, twice.
  • Being your aunt is the easiest job I've ever loved. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, love. Sleepovers at my house still come with pancakes and a very late bedtime.
  • Happy birthday to my niece and my favorite shopping partner. Your taste is better than mine.

Birthday wishes for a niece from her uncle

Uncle cards run shorter, and that's fine. One joke, one plain sentence that says you're proud of her, and your name. The joke is optional. The plain sentence is the part she'll remember.

  • Happy birthday, kiddo. Your uncle is still undefeated at checkers, but not for long.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, the best paper-airplane builder your uncle has ever met. Teach me the long-distance one.
  • Happy birthday from your favorite uncle. I counted the votes myself.
  • You were the bravest one on the roller coaster, and I was the loudest. Happy birthday from your uncle.
  • Happy birthday, kid. Next fishing trip, you're baiting your own hook. You've earned it.
  • Happy birthday to the niece who beat me at arm wrestling. I let you win, and I'm sticking to that story.
  • I'm not great with cards, so I'll keep it simple: you're a great kid, and I'm proud to be your uncle. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. Knowing you makes your uncle at least one year cooler.
  • Happy birthday, champ. Today you pick the music in my car.
  • Happy birthday from the uncle who builds the best blanket forts in the family.

Birthday wishes from an aunt and uncle together

When two people sign one card, write it in one voice instead of blending two. These are written for two signatures, whoever the two of you are.

  • Happy birthday from your aunt and uncle, your two loudest fans in the bleachers.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. We love you more than we love beating your parents at cards.
  • From both of us: you're one of the best things that ever happened to this family. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday from Aunt ___ and Uncle ___. Next visit, you pick the pizza and we pick up the bill.
  • Happy birthday from the two people whose hallway still has your crayon mural on it. We're never painting over it.
  • Two aunts, one card, all the love. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, niece. Your aunties are throwing confetti from across town.
  • We can't wait to see what you do this year. Happy birthday, from both of us.

First birthday wishes for a niece

She won't read this card for years, and she won't remember the day. In a survey of 6,313 people, the average first memory dated to just after age three, and the researchers judged that the nearly 40% who placed theirs at two or younger were likely recalling fictional memories, possibly pieced together from photos and family stories. So write to the person who will find the card later. Louisa May Alcott did a version of this in her journal on 8 November 1880: "Lulu's birthday. One year old." Then she listed the cake with one candle and the rose crown, so the day was on paper.

  • Happy first birthday, little one. Your aunt has already started saving the good stories.
  • One year old. For the record, the first word you ever said to me was "uh-oh," and you were right.
  • Happy first birthday to the newest member of the family. Every grown-up at the party is making faces just for you.
  • To my niece on her first birthday: I've already planned our first trip to the zoo. You just have to learn to walk.
  • Happy first birthday. A year ago I met you in a hospital blanket. Today you're pulling yourself up on the couch.
  • Happy first birthday, sweet pea. Your uncle has a whole list of bad jokes ready for when you can talk.
  • Happy first birthday! One candle, one very messy face, and a room full of people who love you.
  • Happy first birthday to my niece. You slept through half my visit and stole the show for the other half.

Birthday wishes for a little niece, ages 2 to 5

At this age a parent reads the card out loud, and the number is the whole event. Say her name, say how old she is, and mention the thing you two do together, whether that's feeding the ducks or building the same block tower every visit. Keep each sentence short enough to read in one breath.

  • You're THREE! That's a lot of birthday for one small person. Happy birthday!
  • Happy birthday to my little niece, the best dancer in the kitchen.
  • Four years old, and you can count all the way to a hundred. Almost. Happy birthday!
  • Happy birthday, sweet pea. Auntie says two cupcakes. Ask your mom about the second one.
  • Happy birthday to the girl with the muddiest boots and the biggest giggle.
  • Happy fifth birthday to my favorite storyteller. Tell me the dragon one again.
  • Happy birthday, little explorer. Bring your bucket: we're hunting for the shiniest rock in the park.
  • Two years old, and you already know where Auntie keeps the crackers. Happy birthday!
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who was a firefighter at breakfast and a mermaid by lunch.

Birthday wishes for a niece in grade school

From six to twelve she reads the card herself, sometimes out loud in front of friends. She can tell a generic card from one written for her, and an aunt who mentions the science fair she heard about from Mom scores big.

  • Happy birthday to my favorite book buddy. Lend me your next one when you're done.
  • Seven years old, with a gap in your smile and a joke for every occasion. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who wants to know how everything works. Next visit, we're taking apart an old radio.
  • You're ten. Double digits calls for double cake. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I heard about your science project, and I've been bragging about it at work.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who scored her first goal this year. I've watched the video eleven times.
  • Happy birthday. You're old enough now for my real cookie recipe. It's in the envelope.
  • Eleven today. Taller, funnier and still my favorite person to send silly emojis to. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. I spent my twelfth year trying to be as cool as you are now.

The card and the present tend to arrive together, and the detail that makes one work makes the other work too. If she's spent the year as a mermaid, a firefighter or an astronaut, that's your brief: we repaint her from one photo as the star of that world, keeping her real face, or as the guest of honor at her own Birthday Bash, balloon arch and towering cake included. You don't need a photo shoot. One clear photo from her parent's camera roll is enough, and asking for it is a good excuse for the "what is she into" text.

Birthday wishes for a teenage niece

Thirteen to seventeen is when an aunt or uncle can matter most. She doesn't always want to talk to her parents, and you're a grown-up who doesn't set her curfew. Don't use the card to give advice. Use it to tell her she can call you.

  • Happy 13th, niece. Welcome to the teenage years. Your aunt is available for advice, rides and eye rolls.
  • Happy birthday. If you ever want a grown-up to talk to who isn't your parent, I'm right here.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who has better taste in music than me and lets me know it.
  • Fourteen and already funnier than your uncle. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. At your age I had a perm and a diary full of bad poetry. You're doing great.
  • Happy birthday to the coolest teenager I know. I'm told I'm not allowed to say "cool." I'm saying it anyway.
  • Happy birthday, love. Keep being the kind of person who notices the new kid.
  • Fifteen, and you already know what you care about. It took me twenty more years. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who stood up in front of the whole school this year. I'd still be hiding backstage.
  • Happy seventeenth. One more year until you're an adult. Take it slowly; I'm in no hurry.

Sweet 16, quinceañera, 18th and 21st birthday wishes for a niece

These are the cards that end up in a box. Say the number, and say one thing that will still be true when she's thirty.

Quinceañera and sweet 16

The Library of Congress describes the quinceañera as a fifteenth-birthday rite of passage from childhood to young womanhood, usually a Mass or blessing followed by a reception, and godparents can have a part: presenting a Bible, rosary or cross, or handing her the high heels she changes into. If you're her madrina as well as her tía, your card has two jobs. Sixteen is the usual age for a first license to drive alone, though the minimum age runs from 14 and a half in South Dakota to 17 in New Jersey.

  • Happy sweet sixteen to my niece. Your aunt is now officially qualified to embarrass you at your own party.
  • Sixteen! Once you have your license, your first solo road trip is to my house. Lunch is on me. Happy birthday.
  • ¡Felices quince, sobrina! Tonight you shine, and your tía will be the one crying in the second row.
  • Happy fifteenth to my niece. The dress is beautiful, and so are you.
  • Happy sweet sixteen. You were a baby five minutes ago, and now you're the one telling the stories at dinner.

18th birthday

Eighteen is the age of majority in most states, but it's 19 in Alabama and Nebraska and 21 in Mississippi, per Cornell's state-by-state table. Either way, the card can say what changes and what doesn't.

  • Happy 18th. You're officially an adult, which means you can finally hear the full stories about your mom.
  • Eighteen. The world is about to meet you properly. Happy birthday, kid.
  • Happy 18th birthday. Whatever you choose next, you've got an aunt who will show up for it.
  • Happy eighteenth. Your first apartment will need a toolbox, and your uncle already bought it.

21st birthday

Twenty-one is the drinking age in every state because federal law withholds part of a state's highway funding otherwise. So the 21st card tends to get read out loud somewhere noisy, and it should survive that.

  • Happy 21st to my niece. The first round is on your aunt. The second is on your good judgment.
  • Twenty-one! At your first birthday party you threw your cake on the floor. Look at you now. Happy birthday.
  • Happy 21st. Twenty-one years of birthdays, and you've made every single one worth showing up for.
  • Happy 21st birthday, niece. Celebrate loud, get home safe, and call me tomorrow with the details.

Birthday wishes for an adult niece

The little girl who followed you around the backyard now has a job, an apartment, maybe kids of her own. Write to her as a friend, and praise what she's built. Jane Austen managed it two centuries ago, telling her grown niece Fanny Knight in 1817, "You are the delight of my life."

  • Happy birthday to my niece. Somewhere between your pigtails and your first paycheck, you became one of my favorite people.
  • Happy 30th, niece. I remember thirty. You're doing it with a lot more style.
  • Happy birthday. Watching you become a mom has been one of the best parts of being your aunt.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. You call me for advice now, and I still can't believe it. Call your mom too, just in case.
  • You were the little girl who followed me everywhere. Now I follow your career, and I'm in awe. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, my favorite brunch date.
  • Happy 40th, niece. Welcome to the decade when you stop caring what people think. I loved mine.
  • Happy birthday. Your kids have a great mom and a great-aunt who plans to spoil them shamelessly.
  • Happy birthday to the niece who sends me a postcard from every trip. Consider this card my reply.
  • Happy birthday. I tell my friends about you so often they keep asking when they get to meet you.

Funny birthday wishes for a niece

Keep the joke on yourself, on her parents or on the passing years, never on her. Most of these work for a niece of about eight and up.

  • Happy birthday to my favorite niece. I've told your cousins the same thing, but this time I mean it.
  • Happy birthday! Every year you get older, I get younger. That's how aunt math works.
  • Happy birthday from the uncle who taught you to burp the alphabet. Your mother has asked me to apologize. I'm not going to.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. Remember: if anyone asks, the drum kit was your idea.
  • Happy birthday! I baked you a cake. Your parents bought you a backup.
  • Happy birthday! You're officially too old to hide behind my legs at parties. Now I hide behind you.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who once announced at Thanksgiving that my hair "used to be a different color." I'm still recovering.
  • Happy birthday, kiddo. Your present is running late, so technically you get two birthdays.
  • Happy birthday to the only person allowed to call me "old." Everyone else gets a stern look.
  • Happy birthday! I got you a card instead of a pony. Your parents can thank me later.
  • Happy birthday from your uncle, the reason you know three magic tricks and zero tidy habits.
  • Happy birthday to my niece, who is now taller than me. I demand a recount.

Birthday wishes for a great-niece

Great-niece and grandniece are both correct. Merriam-Webster defines a great-niece simply as a grandniece, "a granddaughter of one's brother or sister," and a great-aunt the same way, so use whichever one your family says. Great-aunts and great-uncles have usually known two generations of the family, and that's the angle worth using: you held her parent at her age.

  • Happy birthday to my great-niece. I've kept every school photo your family ever mailed me, and yours are my favorites.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. I held your mom when she was your age, and now I get to cheer for you.
  • Happy birthday from your great-uncle, who is great at exactly one thing: spoiling you.
  • Two generations of nieces, and you're the one who taught me how to video call. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, little one. The family keeps growing, and you're my favorite new branch.
  • Happy birthday to my great-niece. Ask your grandma about the summer she and I got lost on purpose. I'll tell you the rest when you're older.
  • Happy birthday from Great-Aunt ___. I may be older, but I still know how to have a birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the youngest star in our family. Your great-aunt is very proud.

Birthday wishes for a niece-in-law, step-niece or bonus niece

If you're an aunt by marriage, she's simply your niece: Merriam-Webster defines a niece as the daughter of your brother, sister, brother-in-law or sister-in-law. A nephew's wife is usually called a niece-in-law, while a spouse's niece, as Wiktionary puts it, is "usually called a niece." Either way, the rule is the same: say she belongs, and don't claim a closeness that hasn't had time to grow. Follow her lead on the word, too. Some people like "bonus niece," others would rather you used her name.

  • Happy birthday to my niece-in-law. My nephew chose well, and the family is better for it.
  • Happy birthday. You've been in the family photo three years running. That makes it official.
  • Happy birthday to my bonus niece. Same love, different paperwork.
  • Happy birthday to the newest niece in the family. We're so glad you're here.
  • Happy birthday. I'm not your aunt by blood, but I'm your aunt by choice, and that counts.
  • Happy birthday to my step-niece, who made every family holiday louder and happier.
  • Happy birthday. Welcome to a family that sends cards. You'll get one every year now.
  • Happy birthday to my niece-in-law, who remembered my birthday before my own nephew did.

Birthday wishes for a niece who lives far away

Plenty of aunts are writing from a distance. A Pew Research Center survey found that 55% of US adults live within an hour's drive of at least some of their extended family, and one in five live near none of it. Name the distance once, then move on to her. And send a text on the day as well as the card: across experiments with more than 5,900 people, those who reached out underestimated how much the other person appreciated it, and the more unexpected the message, the bigger the gap.

  • Happy birthday from three time zones away. I'll be the one singing badly on the video call at dinner.
  • I can't be at the party, so I'm eating a slice of cake here at the exact same time. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. Send me a picture of the face you made blowing out the candles.
  • Miles away, still your biggest fan. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece. Distance just means the presents travel farther.
  • Happy birthday. Your room at my house is ready whenever your parents can spare you.
  • I'm far away, but I've been crossing off days on my calendar anyway. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, love. Wave at the moon tonight. I'll be waving at it too.

Belated birthday wishes for a niece

You missed it. Say so in the first line, skip the long excuse, and make the rest of the card about her, not about your calendar.

  • Happy belated birthday to my niece. I'm late, so I owe you interest: one extra scoop of ice cream.
  • I missed your birthday, so I'm declaring a birthday week. You're still in it. Happy belated birthday.
  • This card is late, and the love in it isn't. Happy belated birthday.
  • Happy belated birthday! Your aunt got the date wrong but got the niece exactly right.
  • Late again. Consider this the start of your birthday's sequel. Happy belated birthday.
  • Happy belated birthday, sweetheart. Tell me everything I missed, starting with the cake.

Birthday blessings and prayers for a niece

A birthday blessing for a niece reads best in your own words, with a verse added if her family reads scripture together. If you're also her godparent, this is the card where that promise belongs. Scripture has its own brave aunt, too: Jehosheba, who hid her infant nephew Joash and saved his life (2 Kings 11:2).

  • May this year bring you a reason to laugh every day and someone to laugh with. Happy birthday, niece.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. I thank God for the day you joined our family.
  • May God fill your year with joy and your heart with kindness. Happy birthday.
  • I'm praying for you on your birthday, the way I have every day since you were born.
  • Happy birthday, niece. May your faith grow as fast as you do.
  • God blessed our family when He gave us you. Happy birthday.
  • May this new year of your life be full of grace and good surprises. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I asked God to watch over you this year. I'm keeping an eye out too.
  • May the light you bring to this family come back to you a hundred times this year. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my niece and goddaughter. I promised at your baptism to pray for you, and I still do.

Bible verses for a niece's birthday

Each verse below is the King James text, checked word for word, with the reference linked so you can read it in context. 3 John 1:2 is the most natural birthday verse of the lot, because it's literally a wish written in a letter; one popular niece list labels it "John 3:2," which is a different verse about Nicodemus.

Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina: birthday wishes for a niece in Spanish

For bilingual families, and for the tía or tío who says it best in Spanish. The Real Academia Española defines a sobrina as the daughter of your brother or sister, and a great-niece is a sobrina nieta. A great-aunt is a tía abuela. In Mexico, birthdays are often celebrated with early-morning serenades, and Las Mañanitas is often the first song sung, though nobody knows who wrote it. English translations follow each line.

  • ¡Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina! Contigo, la familia siempre está de fiesta. (Happy birthday, niece! With you around, the family is always celebrating.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, mi sobrina querida. Que Dios te cuide y te llene de alegría. (Happy birthday, my dear niece. May God watch over you and fill you with joy.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina. Tu tía ya está apartando su lugar para la próxima fiesta. (Happy birthday, niece. Your aunt is already saving her spot at the next party.)
  • ¡Feliz cumpleaños a mi sobrina favorita! Te quiere mucho tu tía. (Happy birthday to my favorite niece! Your aunt loves you very much.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, sobrinita. Hoy te toca el pedazo más grande del pastel. (Happy birthday, little niece. Today you get the biggest slice of cake.)
  • Mi sobrina linda, que este nuevo año te traiga muchas sonrisas. (My lovely niece, may this new year bring you lots of smiles.)
  • ¡Felicidades, sobrina! Tu tío está muy orgulloso de ti. (Happy birthday, niece! Your uncle is very proud of you.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina. Aunque estemos lejos, hoy te mando un abrazo enorme. (Happy birthday, niece. Even though we're far apart, today I'm sending you a huge hug.)
  • ¡Felices quince, sobrina! Qué orgullo verte bailar hoy. (Happy fifteenth, niece! So proud to watch you dance today.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina. Cada año te quiero más y te admiro más. (Happy birthday, niece. Every year I love you more and admire you more.)
  • ¡Feliz cumpleaños! Que todos tus deseos se hagan realidad. (Happy birthday! May all your wishes come true.)
  • Sobrina, eres un regalo para toda la familia. ¡Feliz cumpleaños! (Niece, you're a gift to the whole family. Happy birthday!)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina nieta. Tu tía abuela te quiere muchísimo. (Happy birthday, great-niece. Your great-aunt loves you so much.)

Short birthday poems for a niece

Four lines each, short enough to copy into a card by hand. We wrote these ourselves, so use them freely.

From an aunt:

Your parents get the early nights,
the lunches packed, the bedtime fights.
I get the cake, the games, the fun,
the best aunt job beneath the sun.

From an uncle:

I taught you how to skip a stone
and how to whistle on your own.
Today I've just one thing to say:
your uncle loves you. Happy day!

For a little niece:

You're three today! Hip hip hooray!
Your aunt has come a long, long way
to eat your cake and sing your song
and dance with you the whole day long.

For a teenage niece:

You've got your plans, your friends, your phone,
a mind and voice that's all your own.
Whatever this new year will bring,
your aunt is cheering everything.

For a grown niece:

I knew you small enough to hold,
then three, then ten, then twelve years old.
And now you're grown, and here I stand,
the proudest aunt in all the land.

A blessing:

May God go with you through this year,
in every step, both far and near,
and may you always know, my dear,
that you are loved. Your aunt is here.

What have real aunts written to their nieces?

Jane Austen wrote some of the best aunt lines in English, mostly in letters to her nieces Fanny, Anna and Caroline, and Louisa May Alcott wrote about her niece Lulu, whom she raised, in her journals. Every line below is traced to the letter, journal or book it came from, so you can copy one into a card and sign it "as Jane Austen once wrote to her niece." Austen spelled the word "Neice," and we've kept her spelling where the source does.

Which niece quotes are misattributed?

Most "niece quotes" online come with a famous name and no source. We checked the common ones. If you like a line below, use it, but sign it as anonymous or as yours.

Popular niece and birthday quotes, and where they really come from
What lists sayWhat we found
"Nieces are God's way of apologizing for not giving us sisters," credited to Maya AngelouNo book, poem or interview is cited anywhere, and it isn't in her Wikiquote entry. It reworks an old quip about friends and families.
A line about nieces "painting our lives with vibrant hues of love," credited to Jane AustenNone of those words appear in her novels, juvenilia or letters. Her real lines to her nieces are in the table above.
Niece lines credited to Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Michelle Obama, the Dalai Lama and Audrey HepburnAll appear only in the same handful of recent quote lists, with no speech, show, book or interview cited. Treat them as anonymous.
"A pattern and example to all aunts... raise the profession of auntship to a fine art," credited to Dave Isay or Louisa May AlcottIt's from Jan Struther's novel Mrs. Miniver (1939). It reached a StoryCorps book because an aunt quoted it in a letter to her niece, and the "(and girls)" in the popular version was added later.
"A niece is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost," credited to Marion C. GarrettyThe line usually credited to Garretty is about a sister, and even that one has no confirmed source. The niece version is a word swap.
"The sisters, cousins, aunts, and niece..." credited to John OsborneIt's W. S. Gilbert, from "Captain Reece" in The Bab Ballads.
"Count your age by friends, not years," credited to John LennonIt comes from a birthday-card poem that a New York newspaper printed in January 1927, 13 years before Lennon was born.
"To laugh often and much... this is to have succeeded," credited to Ralph Waldo EmersonIt traces to Bessie A. Stanley's 1905 essay on success; nobody has found it in Emerson.
"Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter," credited to Mark TwainThe earliest version found is a 1968 newspaper quoting an unnamed researcher; the Twain credit starts in 1977.
Mordecai raised his niece EstherShe was his cousin. Esther 2:7 calls her "his uncle's daughter," whom he took "for his own daughter."

Birthday wishes for a niece in heaven

For aunts and uncles marking a birthday their niece isn't here for. Grief guides such as The Compassionate Friends' stress that every grief is individual, so there's no right way to spend the day. Saying her name out loud is allowed.

  • Happy birthday, sweet girl. Your aunt lit a candle today and told your favorite story.
  • We said your name at dinner today. Happy birthday, niece. We miss you.
  • Happy birthday in heaven to my niece. You made me an aunt, and I'll be your aunt forever.
  • Today we ate your favorite cake and argued about the frosting, the way you would have.
  • Your aunt still buys your favorite candy on your birthday and shares it, the way you always did. Happy birthday, sweetheart.
  • Happy birthday, love. The family photo still has a space that's yours.

Why does a card from an aunt or uncle matter?

Because aunts and uncles fill a role parents can't, and nieces notice. For The Forgotten Kin (Cambridge University Press, 2010), the sociologist Robert Milardo interviewed 104 aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in Maine and New Zealand. He found aunts and uncles who complement parents, mentor, buffer the relationship between parents and children, keep the family history and become lifelong friends, and adults who said their nieces and nephews mentored them back. In a 2006 study of 70 written accounts, nieces and nephews described aunts as teachers, role models, confidantes, savvy peers and second mothers.

Closeness isn't automatic, which is the case for the card. In a 2025 Pew survey, 21% of adults with an aunt or uncle said they were extremely or very close to at least one. From the other side, 69% of adults 50 and older without children who have nieces or nephews feel close to at least one. A yearly card, written to the actual girl, is one of the cheapest ways to end up on the close side of that line.

How do you make a birthday card she keeps?

Date it with the year, sign it with the name she actually calls you, and put in one fact only you would know. "Love, Auntie Jo," "Your favorite uncle (self-appointed)" and "Tía Marisol" all beat a bare first name, because in twenty years the sign-off is how she'll know who wrote it. Austen signed one letter to ten-year-old Caroline, newly an aunt herself, "Believe me, my dear Sister-Aunt, Yours affectionately." More than two centuries later, that letter is still in print.

If you want to go further, write one longer letter every birthday and keep copies, then hand her the stack at eighteen. It costs one evening a year. An aunt who starts late can still start: five letters is a stack.

When the card comes with a present

The card's rule works for the present too: name what she's into this year, and the gift outlasts one that is simply nice.

For a niece up to about twelve, that's what we make. Upload one clear photo of her and pick her world, whether that's a mermaid lagoon, a dragon's mountain or her own birthday party, and we repaint her as its star while keeping her real face, hair and skin tone. A 30-piece chunky jigsaw puzzle is $59 for ages three to five, a 110-piece puzzle is $65 for ages five to seven, and sizes run up to 1,014 pieces at $115. For a wall instead of the floor, the same portrait prints as a gallery-wrapped canvas from $59 or a framed canvas from $79. Every order includes the digital file and ships free in the US, and most arrive within 5 to 10 business days after you approve the proof. You see a watermarked proof before anything prints, her photo is deleted within 24 hours, her name never goes to the image model, and we never use her picture to train AI.

What if you don't have a photo of her?

Send her parents a gift card instead, anywhere from $10 to $500, emailed now or on her birthday. It never expires, and they pick the photo and the world. If she's the one in the family who draws, we can also stitch one of her drawings onto a sweatshirt in real thread. For a grown niece, a portrait necklace drawn from a photo of her own child is a quieter option, from $59.

Questions aunts and uncles ask about a niece's birthday card

What do you write in a niece's birthday card?

+

One specific thing she did this year, then the loving line you were going to write anyway. If you don't know what she's been up to, text her mom or dad and ask what she's into right now. Date the card with the year and sign it with the name she calls you, such as Auntie or Tía, so she can place it when she finds it later.

What is a short birthday message for a niece?

+

"Being your aunt is the best title I've ever had." "Happy birthday to my niece, my favorite reason to show up early." "Happy birthday, champ. Today you pick the music in my car." A short line works as the opening of a card or as a whole text; for a card, add one sentence about her year underneath.

What should an aunt write to her niece on her birthday?

+

Use what only an aunt has: stories about her parent at her age, and the fact that you're a grown-up she can talk to who doesn't set her curfew. "You laugh exactly the way your mom did at your age, and I have the stories to prove it" works at almost any age. For a teenager, add that she can always call you.

What do you say to your adult niece on her birthday?

+

Write to her as a friend and praise what she's built: her work, her home, her kids if she has them. "Somewhere between your pigtails and your first paycheck, you became one of my favorite people" says it. Jane Austen told her grown niece Fanny Knight, "You are the delight of my life," which still works two centuries later.

How do you say happy birthday, niece, in Spanish?

+

"¡Feliz cumpleaños, sobrina!" A sobrina is your brother's or sister's daughter, and a great-niece is a sobrina nieta. To sign as an aunt, use tía; an uncle is tío, and a great-aunt is tía abuela. "Te quiere mucho tu tía" means "your aunt loves you very much."

Is it great-niece or grandniece?

+

Both are correct. Merriam-Webster defines great-niece as grandniece, meaning the granddaughter of your brother or sister, and great-aunt as grandaunt. Use whichever word your family already uses.

What is a good Bible verse for a niece's birthday?

+

3 John 1:2, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health," is the most natural, because it's a wish written in a letter. Numbers 6:24-26 is the classic blessing, and Luke 2:52 suits a child who is growing up. Check the reference before you copy it: some lists label 3 John 1:2 as John 3:2, which is a different verse.

The best line in her card is probably the one you almost left out because it felt too specific. Put it in. If a grandparent is writing a card too, send them the granddaughter version of this list, and if you're still choosing the present, our list of unique birthday gifts for kids is sorted by age.
