200 Birthday Wishes for a Daughter

In short

Write one thing she actually did this year, then the warm line you were going to write anyway. The detail is what makes it her card and not a card for any daughter, and it's the part she'll recognize when she finds it in a box at forty. The wishes below are sorted two ways at once: by how old she is, because a five-year-old and a fifteen-year-old read a card very differently, and by who is holding the pen, from mom, from dad, from both of you, from a stepparent, and from a parent-in-law.

detail that does the work

If she's eighteen, you've written this card eighteen times. Probably more, counting the gift tags, the lunchbox notes and the texts at 6:45 in the morning. You're in good company: Americans buy about 6.5 billion greeting cards a year, and more than half of them are birthday cards, according to the Greeting Card Association. Somewhere around the tenth one the sentences start to repeat, because they come from the same few true things: you love her, you're proud of her, she grew up too fast. All of it is true, and none of it is news to her.

The fix is small. One specific thing from this year, said plainly, does more than any amount of warmth. Below are 200 wishes, poems and verses to start from, grouped so you can skip straight to the daughter you're actually writing to, plus a table of what lands at each age.

An open birthday card and pen on a sunlit kitchen table beside a slice of cake with one lit candle, crayons and a child's crayon drawing of a house
The greeting writes itself. The line under it is the one she keeps.

What do you write in your daughter's birthday card?

Write one concrete detail from the past year, then the affectionate line. That's the whole method. The detail can be small and doesn't need to flatter her: the month she only ate yellow food, the solo she practiced in the garage until the neighbors knew it too, the apartment she painted herself and the paint still on her elbow at dinner. Then write whatever loving sentence you had planned. The loving sentence is fine. It just can't carry the card alone, because she's read it on every card since she could read.

Parents tend to cut the detail because it feels like too much, and the research says that instinct is off. In experiments published in Psychological Science, Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley had people write letters of gratitude and predict how the recipient would react. The writers underestimated how surprised and how good the recipients would feel, and overestimated how awkward the recipients would find it. A birthday card isn't a thank-you letter, but the mistake is the same one: the plain, specific sentence you're tempted to cut is the one that lands.

What should a daughter's birthday card say at each age?

Match the card to whoever will actually read it. A first-birthday card is for her years from now, so date it and write as much as you like. From two to five a parent reads it aloud, so lead with the number and her current obsession. From six to twelve she reads it herself, often in front of friends, so give her one specific thing and a joke she gets. Teenagers read alone and want to be seen as who they are now. From eighteen on, say what changes and what doesn't, and once she's grown, write to her as an equal.

What lands in a daughter's birthday card, by age
Her ageWho reads itWhat landsKeep it to
First birthdayYou, now, and her, years from nowThe date with the year, one thing she did this monthAs long as you like
2 to 5A parent, out loudThe number, and whatever she's obsessed withTwo short sentences
6 to 12She does, often out loud at the partyOne thing she did this year, a joke she getsThree or four sentences
13 to 17She does, aloneWho she is now, never how fast she grewShort, no speeches
18 to 21She does, and she may keep itWhat changes legally, what doesn't change at homeOne honest paragraph
AdultShe does, as an equalHer work, her choices, her kids if she has themWhatever you'd say over lunch

How do you write a birthday message from scratch?

Fill one of these in. The blank is where the detail goes, so put the specific thing there, not an adjective. "This year you learned to swim the whole length of the pool" beats "this year you were amazing" every time.

  • This year you ___. I noticed, and I'm proud of you. Happy birthday.
  • The thing I'll remember about you at ___ is ___. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who ___. Never change that part.
  • A year ago you couldn't ___. Look at you now. Happy birthday.
  • I hope this year brings you ___, and a little more ___ than last year had. Happy birthday.
  • Every time I ___, I think of you. Happy birthday, love from ___.

Short birthday wishes for a daughter

A short birthday wish for a daughter works when it says one true thing in under fifteen words, like "Happy birthday, kiddo. Still the best thing I ever made." These fit texts, gift tags, captions and the inside of a cake box, and each leaves room underneath for one line of your own, which is where the detail goes.

  • Happy birthday to my favorite person to run errands with.
  • Happy birthday, kiddo. Still the best thing I ever made.
  • Another year of you. We got lucky again.
  • Happy birthday to the best plot twist of my life.
  • Happy birthday, love. Take the corner piece of cake.
  • I'm proud of you every day. Today I get to say it out loud.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who still steals my fries.
  • Happy birthday. You're still the best news I ever got.

Heartfelt birthday wishes for a daughter from mom

The birthday wishes from a mom that land hardest name something only she remembers: what the baby weighed, the first word, the way her daughter takes her tea. The mom card is usually the long one, and the one most likely to make somebody cry at the table. Let it. Pick the line that sounds like you and cut the rest.

  • Happy birthday, my girl. I loved you before I knew your face, and knowing it made things much worse.
  • I carried you for nine months and I've carried a photo of you every day since. Happy birthday.
  • You taught me how to be a mother by needing one. I'm still learning from you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter, who has her grandmother's laugh and her own everything else.
  • Of everything I've done, raising you is the one I'd do again, sleepless nights included. Happy birthday.
  • I still check on you, even now, even when you're asleep in another city. Happy birthday, sweetheart.
  • Happy birthday. You're kinder than I was at your age and braver than I am now.
  • The day you were born I stopped being the main character, and I've never once missed it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the only person who knows how I take my tea and exactly when not to ask how I am.
  • Watching you become yourself is the best thing I've ever had a front-row seat for. Happy birthday, love.
  • You'll always be my baby, which I know you hate. Happy birthday anyway.
  • Every year on this day I remember exactly what you weighed. Happy birthday, my darling.

Birthday wishes for a daughter from dad

A good birthday wish from a dad is one small joke and one plain sentence of pride, then stop. Dad cards are usually shorter, and they don't need to be longer. The plain sentence is the part most dads cut, and it's the part she keeps.

  • Happy birthday, kiddo. You were the first person to call me Dad, and I still like the sound of it.
  • I taught you to ride a bike and you taught me patience. I got the better deal. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the only person who can win an argument with me and make me thank her for it.
  • Some people get a lucky streak. I got you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. Call me if anything needs fixing, moving or quietly sorting out.
  • You've had me wrapped around your finger since day one. I've made my peace with it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who made me cry at a kindergarten concert and then told everyone it was allergies.
  • I don't say it enough, so here it is in ink: I'm proud of you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. You'll always have a ride home, any hour, no questions asked.
  • Daughters are supposed to make dads soft. You did it in about four minutes. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my favorite co-pilot, DJ and critic of my driving.
  • Happy birthday from your old dad, who is still in your corner and still terrible at wrapping presents.

Birthday wishes from both parents

When one card goes out from two people, pick one voice instead of blending two into something neither of you would say. These are written for two signatures.

  • Happy birthday from the two people who have loved you the longest.
  • Of all the decisions we've made together, you're the one we'd make again without thinking. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday from Mom and Dad, who still think you're the most interesting person at the table.
  • You're the best thing the two of us ever did. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. Same house, same porch light, always on for you.
  • We'll always be your biggest fans and your worst photographers. Happy birthday.
  • Whatever this year asks of you, there are two of us on your side. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday from your moms, who have the photo albums and are not afraid to use them.

First birthday wishes for a daughter

She won't read this one for years, and she won't remember the day at all. In a survey of more than 6,300 adults, the average first memory dated to just after age three, and the researchers judged that the nearly 40% who placed theirs at age two or younger were most likely recalling a story built later from photos and family retellings. So write this card to the adult who will find it, and put the year on it.

  • One year old. You won't remember today, so we're writing it down: the room was full of people who love you.
  • Happy first birthday. We met you a year ago and we've been rearranged ever since.
  • To our daughter on her first birthday: you made us parents, and you did it without saying a word.
  • Happy first birthday, little one. This is the first card in what will be a very tall stack.
  • One year of you, and we honestly can't remember what we did with our evenings before.
  • Happy birthday. Today you'll get cake in your hair and we'll take two hundred photos of it. Both are traditions now.
  • You turned one today. You took four steps last week and you haven't stopped moving since.
  • Happy first birthday to the smallest person in the house and the loudest.
  • We'll tell you about this day when you're older. Mostly it was frosting. Happy first birthday.
  • To our girl at one: everything you did this year was new, and we got to watch all of it.

Birthday wishes for a little daughter, ages 2 to 5

At this age a parent reads the card out loud and the number is the whole event, so lead with it. Name the thing she's been carrying around the house for months. Keep each sentence short enough to read in one breath.

  • You're FOUR. Four! We're going to need a bigger cake.
  • Happy birthday to my little artist. The fridge is full and I'm not taking anything down.
  • Three years old and already the boss of bedtime. Happy birthday, sweet pea.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who wore a cape to the grocery store and owned it.
  • You're five. That's a whole hand! Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, bug. Today you get to pick dinner, even if it's noodles again.
  • Two years old, and you've learned to say no with a smile. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my favorite puddle jumper. May this year bring the deepest ones yet.
  • Happy birthday to my princess, my dinosaur and my astronaut, depending on the hour.

Birthday wishes for a daughter in grade school

Six to twelve. She reads the card herself now, sometimes out loud in front of her friends, so it has to survive that. She also notices a generic card, and she's quietly pleased when hers isn't one.

  • Happy birthday to the best speller in this house. I'm not even close.
  • Eight years old, and you still ask questions I can't answer. Keep asking. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the kid who reads under the covers and thinks I don't know.
  • You're double digits now. No going back. Happy tenth birthday.
  • Happy birthday. You're funny on purpose now, which is a whole new level.
  • You stood up for the new kid this year. I heard about it. Happy birthday, and I'm proud of you.
  • Happy birthday to the girl with a strong opinion about every pancake.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter, the fastest swimmer and the slowest shoe-tier I know.
  • Twelve. Your last year as a kid, technically. Take your time with it. Happy birthday.

The card and the present usually arrive together, and the detail that makes one land makes the other land too. If she's spent the year as a mermaid, a ballerina or an astronaut, that's the whole brief. We repaint her from one photo as the star of that world, keeping her real face, or as the guest of honor at her own Birthday Bash, with the balloon arch and the towering cake. She gets the puzzle; the card explains why.

Birthday wishes for a teenage daughter

Thirteen to seventeen is the hardest stretch to write for. She's past the sweet card, not ready for the grown-up one, and she can smell forced warmth from the driveway. Drop "you're growing up so fast" entirely. Point at the music, the team, the opinion she defended at dinner, and write to the person she already is.

  • Happy 13th. You're a teenager now, which means I'll be embarrassing you professionally from here on.
  • Happy birthday to the person who knows every song on my playlist and judges all of them.
  • You don't need a five-year plan. You need a good year. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I like who you're becoming, and I'd like her even if I didn't have to.
  • Fourteen today. You've got opinions, a sense of humor and terrible timing with laundry. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter, who borrowed my sweater in March. I've accepted that it's gone.
  • Some days I'll get it wrong as your parent. Today I'm getting it right: happy birthday, and I love you.
  • Happy birthday. Your door can stay closed. Mine's always open.
  • Seventeen, and you already cook better than both of us. Happy birthday, chef.
  • Happy birthday to the kindest person in your friend group. I know, because they all tell me.

Sweet 16, quinceañera, 18th and 21st birthday wishes

The four cards that end up in a box. Say the number out loud, and say one thing that will still be true in twenty years.

Quinceañera and sweet 16

In many Latino families fifteen is the big one. A quinceañera marks a girl's passage from childhood to young womanhood, usually with a Mass or blessing and then a party for the whole family. Sixteen carries its own weight in the US because it's the age most states first let a teen drive without an adult in the car, with limits on night driving and passengers.

  • Happy sweet sixteen. Somewhere a driving instructor is about to earn every dollar.
  • Sixteen. You're allowed not to know what you want yet, and you're allowed to change your mind twice. Happy birthday.
  • ¡Felices quince, mija! Fifteen years of you, and the whole family showed up to say so.
  • Happy fifteenth. Tonight you dance with your father, and tomorrow he'll deny he cried.
  • Happy sixteenth birthday. The keys are almost yours. The curfew is still mine.

18th birthday

In most states she becomes a legal adult at eighteen. In Alabama and Nebraska it's nineteen, and in Mississippi it's twenty-one, per Cornell's state-by-state table. Either way, the card is the place to say what changes and what doesn't.

  • Eighteen. You can vote now, and you can still call me to ask how long to boil an egg. Happy birthday.
  • Happy 18th. The law says you're an adult. I say you're still my kid. We're both right.
  • Eighteen years ago you made me a parent. You've finished growing up and I'm still working on the parent part. Happy birthday.
  • Happy eighteenth birthday. Your choices are yours now. Make some brave ones.

21st birthday

Twenty-one is the legal age to buy alcohol in every state, a standard set by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, which tied part of each state's federal highway money to it. So the 21st card usually gets read at a bar, out loud, and should survive that.

  • Happy 21st. Order something you can pronounce and call me in the morning.
  • Twenty-one. You're old enough for everything now except getting out of family dinner. Happy birthday.
  • Happy 21st birthday. I'll buy the first round and leave before it gets interesting.
  • Twenty-one years as your parent, and you're still my favorite person to talk to. Happy birthday.

Birthday wishes for an adult daughter

She has a job, a lease, maybe a mortgage and kids of her own. The card shifts from doting to something closer to equal, and that shift is the compliment. You probably hear from her more than the old jokes about grown kids suggest: in a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 73% of parents of 18- to 34-year-olds said they text that child at least a few times a week, and 77% called the relationship excellent or very good. So the birthday card is the one message a year that gets kept, and it can say the thing the texts don't. Praise what she's built.

  • Happy birthday to my daughter, the person I'd most want to have lunch with even if we weren't related.
  • You built a life I admire. I'd tell you more often if you'd sit still. Happy birthday.
  • Happy 30th. Your twenties were the rough draft. Enjoy the edit.
  • Thirty, and you're still the first person I want to call with good news. Happy birthday.
  • Happy 40th to my girl. I've been told I can't call you that anymore. I'm going to anyway.
  • Happy fiftieth, darling. Fifty years of you, and you still surprise me.
  • Happy birthday. You're a better parent than I was, and I'm proud enough not to mind.
  • Watching you raise your own kids is like watching a rerun with better writing. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the one who checks on me now. When did that happen?
  • You took the hard road on purpose and made it look easy. Happy birthday.
  • Your old room is a sewing room now, but the bed is still yours whenever you want it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter, who somewhere along the way also became my friend.

Funny birthday wishes for a daughter

Keep these gentle. The joke should be on you, or on time, never on her. Most of these work from about age ten upward.

  • Happy birthday from the person who changed your diapers and still has the photos.
  • You get your good looks from me and your sense of direction from your father. Sorry. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I'd mention how old you are, but that would make me older.
  • I'm not saying you were a difficult toddler, but the neighbors still bring it up. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my favorite daughter. Don't show this card to your sister.
  • Happy birthday to my favorite daughter. Yes, you're my only daughter. It still counts.
  • Happy birthday. You're still on my phone plan, so technically I'm still in charge.
  • Raising you was the best thing I ever did and the reason I have gray hair. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the only person who borrows my clothes and returns them "improved."
  • I asked what you wanted and you sent a link with the size and color already picked. Happy birthday, you organized child.
  • Happy birthday! Here's some money, which is what you wanted, inside a card, which is what I wanted.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter, who once told a restaurant full of strangers how old I am. Revenge is coming.

Birthday blessings and prayers for a daughter

A birthday blessing for a daughter reads warmest in your own words, with a verse added if your family reads scripture together. These are for families where faith is part of the birthday rather than an add-on: start with a line below, then pair it with a verse from the table if it fits.

  • May this year bring you rest when you need it and courage when you don't feel it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, my daughter. You were the answer to a prayer I didn't know how to say.
  • We thank God for you every day, and on your birthday we say it twice.
  • Happy birthday. May your faith be a lamp for you and never a weight.
  • Praying this year gives you good friends, steady work and a quiet heart. Happy birthday.
  • You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and we've had a front-row seat. Happy birthday.
  • May you always know where home is, and who is watching over you there. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. We've prayed for you since before you were born, and we're not stopping now.
  • May the Lord keep you and bring you home safe, this year and every year. Happy birthday.
  • God gave us a daughter, and we've been counting that blessing ever since. Happy birthday.

Bible verses for a daughter's birthday

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."3 John 1:4An adult daughter; written about spiritual children, and it reads naturally from a parent

Birthday wishes for a stepdaughter

Blended families are ordinary: about four in ten American adults have at least one step relative, and 13% have a stepchild, according to Pew Research Center's portrait of stepfamilies. Follow her lead on the word. Some stepdaughters like "bonus daughter," some prefer just their name, and the card is the wrong place to find out. Understate rather than overstate: claiming too much closeness too fast can land wrong.

  • Happy birthday to the daughter I didn't get to raise from the start but get to cheer for from here on.
  • When I joined this family, you were the one I hoped would like me. Thanks for taking the chance. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I'm not here to replace anyone. I'm here to be one more person on your side.
  • Happy birthday to my bonus daughter, which is the best word anyone ever came up with.
  • Happy birthday. Thanks for teaching me how your family does pancakes. I'm still practicing.
  • You let me into your life one inch at a time, and every inch was worth it. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, kiddo. Our story started in the middle, and I love where it's going.
  • I don't need a title to be proud of you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the girl who made this house feel like a family.

Birthday wishes for a daughter-in-law

She may have a mother of her own she's close to, so write to her as family without casting yourself in a role that's already taken. The word that tends to go wrong is "like." "You're like a daughter to me" can read as competing with her own mother, while "you're family" just says she belongs.

  • Happy birthday to the daughter my son brought home and we got to keep.
  • You joined this family and raised the average. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. I gained a daughter, and the family group chat gained someone with taste.
  • You make my son a better man and Sunday dinner a better meal. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to my daughter-in-law, who by now is simply family.
  • Thank you for loving my child so well. Happy birthday, and many more.
  • Happy birthday. The guest room is officially "your room" now. No take-backs.
  • Long before I met you, I hoped my son would find someone kind. He found you, and you're kinder than I pictured. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to the one who didn't come with the family but chose it anyway.
  • Happy birthday to the woman who married my daughter and made our family bigger and happier.

Birthday wishes for a daughter who lives far away

Name the distance once, then move on to her. A card that spends four lines apologizing for not being there reads as guilt rather than love. And send the text too, not only the card: across experiments with more than 5,900 people, those who sent a quick "thinking of you" message consistently underestimated how much it was appreciated, and the more unexpected the message, the bigger the gap.

  • Happy birthday from too many miles away. This card got there first, and I'm right behind it.
  • You're in a different time zone, and I still wake up thinking about you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday, love. Send me a photo of the cake so I can pretend I had some.
  • The house is quiet without you, which I used to want and now don't. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. Call me after the party and tell me everything, even the boring parts.
  • I can't hug you today, so this card is doing it for me. Squeeze it. Happy birthday.
  • You moved, you built a life, and you still call your mom. Happy birthday to the bravest person I know.
  • Happy birthday. Your flight home is on me this year, whenever you want it.
  • I still set out a third mug some mornings. Happy birthday. I miss you.

Birthday wishes for a daughter in Spanish

For bilingual families, and for the abuela who will be reading over her shoulder. "Mija" is the affectionate contraction of mi hija, my daughter, used across Mexico, the US and most of Latin America, according to the Diccionario de americanismos. Las Mañanitas, the traditional Mexican birthday song, is often sung as an early-morning serenade; nobody knows who first wrote it. English translations follow each line.

  • ¡Feliz cumpleaños, mija! Eres la alegría de esta casa. (Happy birthday, sweetheart! You're the joy of this house.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, hija. Que cumplas muchos más, y que yo esté para verlos. (Happy birthday, daughter. May you have many more, and may I be there to see them.)
  • Mi niña, hoy celebramos el día en que llegaste a cambiarnos la vida. (My girl, today we celebrate the day you arrived and changed our lives.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños a mi hija, mi orgullo y mi corazón. (Happy birthday to my daughter, my pride and my heart.)
  • Que Dios te bendiga hoy y siempre, mija. ¡Feliz cumpleaños! (May God bless you today and always, sweetheart. Happy birthday!)
  • Eres la mejor parte de mi historia. Feliz cumpleaños, hija. (You're the best part of my story. Happy birthday, daughter.)
  • ¡Felices quince, mija! Hoy eres la reina de la fiesta y de nuestro corazón. (Happy fifteenth, sweetheart! Today you're the queen of the party and of our hearts.)
  • Aunque estés lejos, siempre estás en mi corazón. Feliz cumpleaños, hija. (Even though you're far away, you're always in my heart. Happy birthday, daughter.)
  • Feliz cumpleaños, mi amor. Gracias por hacerme mamá. (Happy birthday, my love. Thank you for making me a mom.)
  • ¡Feliz cumpleaños, mija! Ya sabes que aquí hay pastel y Las Mañanitas a todo volumen. (Happy birthday, sweetheart! You know there's cake here, and Las Mañanitas at full volume.)

Short birthday poems for a daughter

Four lines each, short enough to copy into a card by hand without running out of room. We wrote these ourselves, so use them freely.

For any age:

Another year, another cake,
another wish for you to make.
Whatever the candles are for,
I hope you get it, and then more.

From mom, or from both of you:

You came in small and loud and new,
and everything made room for you.
We'd do it all again, my dear,
the whole of it, and every year.

From dad:

I've fixed your bike and checked your tires
and put out all your smaller fires.
Of all the jobs I've had, it's true,
the best one's always been for you.

For a grown daughter:

You're grown and gone and doing well,
with stories only you can tell.
But on this day I'll just admit
I miss the kid you were a bit.

A blessing:

May this new year be kind to you
in all you start and all you do,
and may you know, come what may,
you're loved a little more each day.

For a five-year-old:

Today you're five. Hooray for you!
Tomorrow you'll be five still too.
So blow the candles, make it loud,
and look at us: we're very proud.

Birthday wishes for an estranged daughter

This is more common than it feels from the inside. In a nationally representative Cornell survey of more than 1,300 adults, 27% said they had cut off contact with a family member, and 10% were estranged from a parent or child. If you're writing across a silence, keep the card short and ask nothing of her. Leave out the past, the conditions and the "when you're ready." The only job this card has is to say you remember her and the door isn't locked.

  • Happy birthday. I'm thinking of you today, and I hope it's a good one.
  • Happy birthday. No reply needed. I just wanted you to know I remember.
  • I hope this year is kind to you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday. The door is open whenever you want it, and only if you want it.
  • Thinking of you on your birthday and wishing you well, today and always.
  • Happy birthday. I love you, and I respect the space you've asked for.
  • Happy birthday. Whatever you're doing today, I hope there's cake involved.
  • I miss you. Happy birthday. That's all this card is for.

Birthday wishes for a daughter in heaven

For parents marking a birthday their daughter isn't here for. The Compassionate Friends, the US support network for families after a child dies, names a child's birthday among the dates that bring the pain back, and suggests keeping special rituals on it. Grief researchers have a name for this: continuing bonds, the finding that healthy grieving often means keeping a connection with the person who died rather than cutting ties. There's no wrong way to spend the day, and saying her name out loud is allowed.

  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. We lit your candle and said your name out loud.
  • We still count the years, and we still celebrate you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to our daughter. You're missed in every room and loved in all of them.
  • Today we did something you loved, because that's how we keep you close.
  • Happy birthday, my girl. Your day still makes the world bigger, even now.
  • We miss you most on the days meant for you. Happy birthday, love.
  • Everyone at the table had a story about you today. Happy birthday, sweetheart.
  • Forever our daughter, forever loved. Happy birthday in heaven.

How do you make a birthday card she keeps?

Date it with the year, sign it with the name she actually calls you, and put in one fact only you would know. Cards survive in shoeboxes because of the fact. "We're so proud of you" tells a future reader nothing about who she was that year, while "the summer you wouldn't take off the swim goggles" puts her right back in the room.

Some parents go further and write one longer letter on every birthday, sealed and saved, then hand over the whole stack at eighteen or on her wedding day. It costs one evening a year, and it turns the card from a greeting into a record. If you start late, start anyway: a stack of eight letters is still a stack.

Date it with the year. In twenty years, that's how she'll place it.

When the card comes with a present

The card's rule works for the present too: a gift that names what she's into this year outlasts one that is simply nice.

For a daughter up to about twelve, that's what we make. Upload one clear photo of her and pick her world, whether that's a mermaid lagoon, a ballet stage or her own birthday party, and we repaint her as its star while keeping her real face, hair and skin tone. A jigsaw puzzle is $65 for 110 pieces, which suits ages five to seven; the 30-piece chunky version is $59 for ages three to five, and sizes run up to 1,014 pieces at $115. For a wall instead of a rainy afternoon, the same portrait prints as a gallery-wrapped canvas from $59 or a framed canvas from $79. Every order includes the digital file and ships free in the US, and most arrive within 5 to 10 business days after you approve the proof. You see a watermarked proof before anything prints, her photo is deleted within 24 hours, her name never goes to the image model, and we never use her picture to train AI.

For a grown daughter, a portrait necklace drawn from a photo of her own child, or of her as a kid, is a quieter option: a pendant about an inch tall, from $59, made to order in the US and out of the workshop in 2 to 5 days.

Questions parents ask about a daughter's birthday card

What do you write in your daughter's birthday card?

+

One specific detail from her past year, then the loving line you were already going to write. The detail is what makes the card hers: a habit, a win, a phase she's in. Date it with the year and sign it with the name she calls you, because those two things are what make the card readable in twenty years.

What is a short and meaningful birthday message for a daughter?

+

"Another year of you. We got lucky again." or "Happy birthday. You're still the best news I ever got." A short message works best as the opening line, with one sentence about her year underneath it. For a text, the short line alone is enough, and it doesn't need an emoji to count.

How do you write a heart-touching birthday wish for a daughter?

+

Describe a moment only you saw, in plain words, and then say what it meant to you. "I watched you walk into your first day of college without looking back, and I've never been prouder" moves people more than any list of adjectives. Research on written gratitude found that writers consistently underestimate how good their words make the reader feel, so write the sentence you're tempted to cut.

What should a dad write in his daughter's birthday card?

+

A small joke and one plain sentence of pride, then stop. Dad cards run shorter and drier than mom cards, and they work that way. The sentence most dads leave out is "I'm proud of you," usually because it feels like too much. It isn't, and it's the line she keeps.

How do you wish your daughter a happy birthday with a prayer?

+

Write a one-line blessing in your own words, such as "May this year bring you rest when you need it and courage when you don't feel it," and add a verse if your family reads scripture together. The priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26, "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee," is one of the most widely used, and it fits any age.

What is a good Bible verse for a daughter's birthday?

+

Numbers 6:24-26 for a blessing, Psalm 139:14 ("I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made") for a daughter who needs to hear she's enough, and Zephaniah 3:17 for a parent who wants to say "you are delighted in." Check the reference before you copy it: popular lists mislabel some of these, and a few verses that get attached to daughters were written about someone else entirely.

What do you write in a daughter-in-law's birthday card?

+

Write to her as family without claiming a role that may already be filled. "You joined this family and raised the average" or "by now you're simply family" both land. "You're like a daughter to me" can read as competing with her own mother, so it's safer to say she belongs than to say who she replaces.

The best line in this card is probably the one you just talked yourself out of. Put it in. If she's younger, there's more for the present in our list of unique birthday gifts for kids; if a grandparent is writing a card too, send them the granddaughter version of this list. And if the thing on your fridge is a drawing she made rather than a photo of her, we stitch it onto a sweatshirt in real thread, which makes a very good birthday present for the artist herself.
