The traditional seventh anniversary gift is wool or copper on the American list, and wool on the British one. Neither appears in Emily Post’s 1922 list, which went from the fifth anniversary straight to the tenth.

What Does the 7th Anniversary Gift Mean?

Seven is the year of the famous itch, and both materials answer it. Wool is warmth and comfort, the year a marriage is meant to feel like home. Copper conducts heat and turns green slowly with age, which suits a year about lasting through. Pick whichever material your partner would actually use. The 7th is not in Emily Post’s Etiquette (1922), which listed only eight anniversaries. It comes from the expanded year-by-year list generally credited to American jewelers in 1937 (history).

What Are Good 7th Anniversary Gift Ideas?

  1. A good wool blanket. One that lives on the sofa, not in the cupboard.
  2. Copper pans. For a cook, the most-used copper gift there is.
