There is a strange thing about a baby's first Christmas. It is the most photographed December of a person's life, and the only one they are guaranteed not to remember. What can a baby actually see of a gift?
Less than most first Christmas lists assume, and closer than you would think. HealthyChildren.org, the American Academy of Pediatrics parenting site, puts a newborn's best focal distance at 8 to 12 inches, about the gap between a feeding baby's eyes and yours; the American Optometric Association puts that primary focus at 8 to 10 inches. Distance vision is blurry at first. The AOA places good color vision at around five months, with depth perception arriving in the same window.
That has a practical consequence. For the first months, a wrapped object across the room is invisible to the recipient. It also means the wall above the changing table does more visual work than the toy shelf. Something large, high contrast and hung low enough to fall inside a baby's world is one of the few decorative choices an infant genuinely registers, which is the case for personalized kids wall art hung at the child's height rather than at adult gallery height.
Is a milestone blanket safe in the crib?
No, and this is the gap in almost every first Christmas gift list. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2022 safe sleep policy is explicit: keep soft objects and loose bedding, including blankets and non fitted sheets, out of the infant's sleep area. The recommendation covers the whole first year, and the AAP points parents toward layers of clothing or a wearable blanket instead of a loose one.
